It gets better, Rose

If you’re queer and online it’s been hard in the last month not to pick up the “It Gets Better” project, making short videos where people who had a hard time growing up because of biphobic, homophobic and transphobic bullying talk about how that is a tough time but life does improve especially once you leave school. A brilliant initiative, using the widespread and easily accessed technology of YouTube and blogs to reach people in need of support cheaply and without needing the help of the mainstread media.

Though the first few videos often focused on lesbian and gay young people’s experiences, there are now more “It Gets Better” videos being made aimed at supporting bisexual young people who are being bullied. Actors Stephanie Riebel, Fay Wolf, and Kristen Howe from web mini-series “Rose by any other name” have got back together to film one – with the help of filmmaker Kyle Schickner and the American Institute of Bisexuality. A busy bi week

What are you up to this week? This week’s bi diary includes meetings in Swansea and Manchester – both on Tuesday evening – and Oxford and Edinburgh on Wednesday. And the week rounds off with Birmingham BiFest.

So depending where you are on Tuesday you could pop along to Manchester’s regular bi social, a pub meet at the Waterhouse pub next to the town hall. Or you could join the Swansea bis for their regular discussion night.

Wednesday if you’re in Oxford the local bis have a meet-up in the Castle Tavern, while in Edinburgh there’s the monthly Bi Edinburgh meet at the LGBT centre on Broughton Street.

Saturday sees Birmingham BiFest. This is their second – last autumn’s was a splendid day out for bis, partners, friends and allies, and this one promises to be even better.

Bristol’s PolyDay

Just over a week way, PolyDay will be a one-day event held in Bristol for everyone for whom happy and honest relationships don’t have to be monogamous. Polyday combines a day of discussions and an evening of cabaret and socialising to give you a chance to meet like-minded people, to build a sense of polyamorous community and to celebrate its diversity.

At Polyday you’ll meet a wide variety of people who all have different answers to these questions, but who all know that happy and honest relationships don’t have to be monogamous.

It’s not a bi specific event but the themes of the day will no doubt be of interest to many bi and bi-curious people.

There will be talks and discussion groups throughout the Saturday, followed by an evening of cabaret and socialising.
