5th December 1998: The Bisexual Flag

There’s so much pink, purple and blue bi stuff these days it’s hard to imagine a time before those colours became a ubiquitous code for ‘bi’.

But like every flag, the bi flag had to be invented and it made its first appearance in the world at the end of 1998.

It was invented by BiNet USA volunteer Michael Page in response to the growing visibility and value of the rainbow flag as a symbol for lesbian and gay people.

The three stripes represent same-gender attraction (pink), opposite (blue) and the middle stripe both (purple being a blend of the two). With four-fifths of the flag thus symbolising homosexuality or heterosexuality, this is surely one of the most generous flags in the world – what nation devotes 80% of its flag to its neighbours?
