Football v Biphobia

19 Feb: Football v BiphobiaOn February 19th last year, The Justin Campaign launched “Football v Homophobia” – to have a day opposing homophobia in and around football. The aim is to provide an opportunity for individuals, communities and teams the world over to communicate their disapproval of homophobia in the game and celebrate its diverse following. This year on the 19th they want lesbian, gay, bi and trans people to come together to play, talk and campaign around the issues faced by our communities in relation to football.

They say:

“Bisexual, queer and pansexual people have the right to live without prejudice and discrimination within LGBT spaces and the wider world. Despite making up a large part of the LGBT population, bisexual people are made invisible by other people’s assumptions. They’re called greedy, confused or being half way towards coming out as gay.”

Football V Biphobia can give a chance to explore how bi people experience football, a platform to challenge biphobia or a chance to play some footy in a safe environment.

Maybe you love playing. Maybe you’re a fan but haven’t played since school. Maybe you hate it but think people should have the right to play without facing other people’s prejudice.

Some ideas for what you can do:

  • Use the day to campaign for bi/queer inclusion in football
  • Organise a debate about bi/queer identities in football
  • Organise a kickabout in a safe environment
  • Write a press release recognising the day

Football V Biphobia is facilitated by The Justin Campaign alongside Football V Transphobia and Football V Homophobia. They recognise that bi networks are under-supported and so want to assist in ensuring that you get what you need out of the day. Find out more.
