IDAHOT!

Today (May 17th) is the International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia, marking 21 years since the World Health Organization declassified homosexuality as a mental disorder.  Across the world there are events and shows of support for tackling prejudice against lesbian, gay, bi and trans people and the profile of “IDAHO” is growing every year.

There are at least 150 events for the International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia in the UK this year making it the biggest ever. Many of these events can be seen on the Day Against Homophobia website.

They range from local meetings to a motion in parliament. Town Halls and other public buildings across the UK will be flying the rainbow flag to show their support (indeed, we gather some of them have put it up a day or two early!)

The internet gives a wider voice too, with the “As I Am” project inviting people to share creative artwork and expression to reflect that as well as being lesbian, gay, bi or trans, LGBT people are also people with a host of other sides to who they are.

Bi bloggers might like to speculate about the B missing from the name, but for today at BiMedia we’re celebrating the work being done to challenge transphobia and homophobia (and often thus biphobia too) across the UK and beyond.

  1. Support your family and friends, like and pass this on. People do not have a ‘mental disorder’ if they are gay and they are not abnormal. What is ‘normal’? I have friends and family who are gay and I am celibate (which means ‘not fucking interested’)! I guess this then makes us all mentally retarded according to the World Health Organisation.
