2010’s International Bisexual Conference in London saw the first space for Black bis at such an event in a decade. A year later the 2011 BiCon in Leicester saw a similar session, in turn sparking new work on challenging racism in bi spaces.
In the 1990s there had been regular meetings of the Black Bi Group in London in a room adjoining where London Bi Group met – LBG was unusual in having several rooms for its meetings where most bi groups had at best one room to themselves. BiCon 1996’s “Race and Racism” workshop had been co-led by members of the Black Bi Group, Black Lesbian & Gay Centre, and HIV support group Blackliners.
1997’s BiCon had a Black Bis workshop too; in the years between then and 2010 we don’t think there was another such session at BiCon – but we are open to correction!
