9th June 1985: London Lesbian & Gay Centre changes its mind on bis

A packed meeting of members of the London Lesbian & Gay Centre in the Conway Hall on June 9th, 1985 voted to revoke the centre’s ban on bisexual people and groups using its facilities.

Bi Monthly reported that “The votes against lifting the ban came mostly from a caucus of women who have persistently aimed to prevent bisexuals and S&M groups from meeting in the new building”.

Bisexuality and biphobia was a serious issue in the gay and lesbian community at the time: a few weeks later at London Lesbian &  Gay Pride, Ken Livingstone MP addressed the crowd, declaring “we are all bisexual” to a cheer that never came.
