Money talks for LGBT rights abroad

The coalition government has announced that overseas aid funding may be cut to countries which treat their bisexual, gay and trans citizens badly.

Malawi has already had its funding cut and the International Development Secretary Andrew Mitchell has warned he is willing to reduce aid to Uganda and Ghana unless they reform their laws on LGBT rights.

A spokesman for the International Development office is reported as adding that, “The Government is committed to combating violence and discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in all circumstances, in this country and abroad. We take action where we have concerns.

“We only provide aid directly to governments when we are satisfied that they share our commitments to reduce poverty and respect human rights.”

As the government is increasing the overseas aid budget to meet international targets this is also good news for those countries which receive aid and treat their LGBT citizens fairly.
