We were revolting, too!

This Saturday sees a special speaker panel in London from 2-6pm at the Bishopsgate Institute to celebrate four decade of LGBT activism in the UK.

“We Are Revolting! 40 Years of Queer Activism”  is organised by the Lesbian and Gay Newsmedia Archive (LAGNA), as a free event to acknowledge and commemorate the unsung heroes and heroines of LGBT activism and protest over the last four decades.

There are no bi specific speakers so far as we can tell – hopefully BiMedia.org readers can contribute from the floor with the story of how the bi movement’s development has run in parallel to and interwoven with LGBT as a whole.

Speakers include:

Dr Matt Cook (Author and lecturer at Birkbeck College London) on the history of Queer protest.

Lindsay River (Performer and Activist) on protests in the lesbian-feminist movement in the 1970’s.

Ajamu X (Photographer and Curator of Rukus! – Black LGBT Archive) on  Black LGBT activism in the 1980s and beyond.

Ian Lucas  (Author and activist) on OutRage! and Act-Up in the 1990s.

Mike Wyeld  (Lecturer and Film Maker)  Contemporary trans cultural activism, showing excerpts from the film Lovers and Fighters.

Robert Thompson, Chair of LAGNA says:  “There are organisations and individuals whose invaluable campaigning work for the LGBT communities have been extensively acknowledged, not just by the communities themselves, but by the wider population.

“But what of those generally less well known individuals, whose contributions haven’t been given the recognition and acclaim they deserve?  This is their chance to tell their stories, and to give a different account of LGBT activism in the UK since the 1970s.”

Attendance at the event is free, but RSVP is essential to reserve your place.  Tea, coffee, wine and nibbles will be provided.  There will also be a raffle with the chance to win a number of fabulous goodies!
