MPs think same-sex marriage will pass

"Bi Do!"
Whether they are for or against it, MPs think we'll get our way

A survey of Members of Parliament says they think that the law will change to allow same-sex couples to marry.

Despite a threatened rebellion of 100 or more Conservative members on the issue, a ComRes poll of MPs showed that twice as many think the bill will pass as believe it will fail.

Newer and female MPs, and those representing London constituencies, are more likely to believe the law will make it through the legislative process unscathed. Three in five MPs believed – wrongly – that civil partnerships already give the same legal rights as marriage, so there seems to still be a need for campaigners for change to illustrate the differences to parliamentarians.

Same-sex marriage is not part a of the coalition agreement, however all three main party leaders have voiced their support for the change.
