The openly bisexual Liberal Democrat MP Simon Hughes has been elected deputy leader of his party this evening. The election followed the previous deputy leader stepping down due to taking up a cabinet post in the new Coalition Government.

Stonewall had used the deputy leadership contest to highlight the relative voting records on LGBT issues of the two candidates, aguing that Simon Hughes had a significantly better record than rival Tim Farron MP. Farron spoke out in response about how his relatively recent arrival in the Commons, elected only in 2005, skewed the figures.
