John Pienaar, Chief political correspondent of the BBC’s Radio Five news & sport station is among the journalists who still haven’t quite got the hang of this bisexuality thing. In his roundup of the political year for the BBC website he comments,
Two of Charles Kennedy’s potential successors are forced to expose themselves, or be exposed in rapid succession, as gay (for which Simon Hughes receives sympathy and respect) and a user of male prostitutes (for which Mark Oaten receives less).
Lib Dem MP Simon Hughes came out at the start of 2006 as having relationships with men and women. There’s a word for that, and it doesn’t begin with “g”. You’d think writing about MPs from the UK’s third party might have served as a reminder that there might be more to life than just gay and straight.
