Same-sex marriage returns to the Commons

photo: Houses of ParliamentThe same-sex marriage bill for England and Wales returns to the House of Commons main chamber today and tomorrow.

Amendments will be debated including questions on whether registrars will have an opt-out clause on officiating same-sex weddings, clauses around how the law will treat transgender people, and whether to amend it to include mixed-sex civil partnerships.

Assuming the bill passes third reading (second reading was passed by a clear margin) it then moves to the House of Lords for a similar series of debates before it can become law.
