Yesterday and today saw the second reading of the Same-Sex Marriage Bill in the House of Lords.
After a specially extended debate, a wrecking amendment fell and by 390 to 148 votes the bill passed second reading. It will now move to committee stage later this month before coming back to the house for third reading.
There were many passionate speeches, but line of the day surely went to reactionary peer James Graham, the 8th Duke Montrose, whose attempt to use the phrase “lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender” came out as the fabulously mangled “lesbian gay and gender transmutant people”, before explaining why they shouldn’t be allowed to marry.
Those who disagree with him have started massing on Facebook, of course…
